My Grandfather's Trip
Some years ago, my grandfather Miguel told us a story about his trip when he was 16 years old. This is a strange story, but at the same time, it’s beautiful. When he was 16, he lived with his aunt’s family because he was an orphan. So, at that time, he was working for them. One day, his uncle asked him to carry some bottles of liquors called “Mallorca” to his friend who lived so far from there.
So, my grandpa started to organize the things
for the trip like food, water, and some sweets. While he was preparing the
bottles in a box, his cousin appeared and told him that near the bridge between
Selva Alegre and Potrerillo were two black dogs. He must be careful with them.
My grandfather was scared, but in the end, he announced that if God was with
him, nothing harmful could happen. He finished organizing the bottles and rode
his horse.
In the middle of the road, he started thinking
about what his cousin said, and he felt cold, then two men appeared. They were
policemen who were doing the watch. They stopped my grandfather to check what
he was doing and what articles he was carrying in the box. He was too nervous,
and unfortunately, it started to rain. For three hours, it was raining, and he
was there with the policemen. My grandpa was listening to the conversation
between them when one man said that it was late and stranger things always
occurred around the bridge. So, they let my grandpa go. My grandfather was
tired and soaking, but he again rode his horse.
He was running too fast to arrive at that
place; however, it seemed useless. When he was near the bridge, something
curious happened to him. Suddenly, a little white dog appeared, and it did not
away from the legs of the horse, so it was keeping away my grandfather and his
horse from the path. My grandfather never felt fear.
Fortunately, it was no longer raining, so he
was sitting and waiting until the dog left. At the end of the day, he arrived
at the house of his uncle’s friend. He was sleepy and cold, but this person
gave him a warm blanket and some hot coffee. And that’s the story.
